Many who are first will be last, while many who are last will be first. This was the case for Elize Rokebrand of Klerksdorp who, on Thursday, 5 December, was the last to try her hand at unlocking the doors to a brand new Renault Kwid Life.

Rokebrand was one of five finalists in Engo Free State’s Project of Hope invited to Renault in Bloemfontein to decide upon the winner of the car, valued at R196 999.

These finalists James Mosea and Jackie Henning from Bloemfontein, Jean du Plessis from Welkom, and Ina Hennop and Rokebrand from Klerksdorp – first had to draw lots to determine the order in which they would randomly choose the winning remote car key. Each of the five then had a turn at pressing the unlock button on their respective key, to hopefully unlock the veiled Renault Kwid in the display area.

The first four attempts proved unsuccessful. Even when Rokebrand pressed the button on her key, she thought nothing had happened.

Then, under thunderous applause, she pressed the button again, revealing that she was, indeed, the winner.

Rokebrand, who works for the Tasha’s Lunches and Dinners catering company in Klerksdorp, said her car broke down three years ago and since then she has been reliant on others to get anywhere. This was also the case for her trip to Bloemfontein to attend the event.

Rokebrand said that Tasha’s Lunches and Dinners did the catering at many of the events where tickets representing a donation of R30, or more, for Engo’s Project of Hope were sold.

“I bought a ticket at every one of these functions.”

Her ticket was one of 19 365 that were sold across the Free State since February of these, 1 298 were sold online. The amount of tickets sold exceeds that of the previous Project of Hope.

This year, 56 Engo programmes participated in this project and will benefit from it directly. Ultimately, 4 789 donations through these tickets were received at functions, markets, and Engo’s main office in Bloemfontein, with 3 230 in Welkom, and 1 726 in Senekal.

Engo has 67 different centres, homes and offices in the Free State that benefit from the project.

Children, the elderly, destitute families in Free State communities, persons with a disability, the sickly receiving treatment in hospital, and those looking to adopt children or put them up for adoption – all these individuals benefit.
