Bloemfontein-based long-distance runners Mokulubete Likotsi (38) and Malefane Nkhi (49) are beaming with pride after each received a medal at this year’s Comrades Marathon on Sunday (11/06).

Representing the Free State through the Mangaung Athletics Club, the pair were among the scores of runners who competed in the gruelling race, dubbed the Human Race, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on the downward-run course.

Nkhi attained a silver medal.

For Likotsi, this is her second medal, having made her debut in the race last year. She won her second Bill Rowan medal, while Nkhi got his fifth silver medal – inspiring him to secure gold in the future.

“This is one of my proudest moments and great inspiration, as I am aiming for the top five, a gold medal, and prize money in future,” says Nkhi.

He debuted in 2011 and has made strides since then.

“I started in 2011, in an upward-run, attaining silver in 6:43 – and have not looked back since.”

Nkhi’s best time is 6:05 in a downward-run in 2016. This year he finished the race in 6:57.

“I want to lead by example to those I am coaching and show them that nothing is impossible,” says Nkhi.
