The Bloemfontein-based Unified Social Club has presented Dipuo Letitia Vinger (106) with a treasure trove of food groceries.

The kindness of this gesture was twofold, as it coincided with the spirit of spreading Christmas joy while celebrating with Vinger her milestone of turning 106.

Beaming with joy, Vinger has expressed great appreciation for the social club’s gesture of goodwill.

She was born in Tikwe, Virginia, and worked as a domestic worker for numerous years.

“This was a total surprise for me, and I am very appreciative of the club members’ gesture of goodwill and showing care. I am going to enjoy the good food with my family,” says Vinger.

Balala McKenzie (80) says the decision to present the grocery hamper was taken to celebrate Vinger’s milestone birthday and, secondly, take part in the spirit of Christmas.

“Our gesture is to celebrate her, as she is our treasure – the oldest living person we have come to know.

“It is a great honour to still have people like her living more than 100 years. We were told and read about such stories only in the Bible,” says McKenzie, who is the second oldest club member, after Victor Mahatanya (80).

At the age of 106, Vinger is as fit as a fiddle and does not use a walking stick. She says she has never consumed alcohol or smoked anything. She has fond memories of her upbringing and recalls the type of food her elders would discourage her from eating.

Crowning it all, Vinger says she has a clean bill of health.

“I do not suffer from any chronic diseases; even medical doctors have confirmed I have no underlying disease. I always get a clean bill of health whenever I do health screening.

“Cataracts were the only condition I suffered, but since undergoing surgery on both my eyes, I have had no difficulty. I see, and I can hear properly. It is a miracle, because several people my age and younger suffer from different diseases,” said Vinger.
