The Free State saw even more road fatalities and the worst case of drunken driving during this year’s Easter recess, according to Sindisiwe Chikunga, minister of Transport. Findings were compiled by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, revealed that the drunk driving incident, near Harrismith, saw 1,16 mg of alcohol in 1 000 ml of breath – 4,8 times over the legal limit.

Also, 15 fatalities were recorded, eight more than last year. Common violations included speeding, operating unlicensed vehicles, driving without a license, driving without fastening seats belts, and driving with worn tyres.
