The 2023 National Youth Day celebration marks a catalyst for South African youths to seriously venture into entrepreneurial pursuits, given South Africa’s escalating rate of unemployment under the youth, which currently stands at 62,1%.
Resonating with the plan, the South African government launched a Youth Month programme under the theme “Accelerating youth economic emancipation for a sustainable future” on 1 June.
This year’s Youth Day commemoration will be held on 16 and 17 June at the Mangaung Outdoor Sports Centre in Bloemfontein, where Deputy Pres. Paul Mashatile is expected to deliver a keynote address.
The event will mark 47 years of the youth uprising in Soweto on 16 June 1976, and other activities relating to the struggle for freedom. On the day in question, multitudes of young people took to the streets to protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction under the apartheid rule.
In the democratic rule, youths face the struggle of unemployment, hence the hosting of entrepreneurship programmes as a start to engage the younger demographic to venture into economic activities.
