A horrific accident involving the collision of an Intercity bus and a truck on the N1 outside Bloemfontein on Tuesday (27/06), has claimed the life of one person. The victim is a woman and has been identified as Primrose Madolwane (47).
She was among the 42 people, including the two drivers, involved in the accident. The bus and the truck reportedly collided a few kilometres before the exit point of the R30 road and N1, at about 01:45.
Capt. Loraine Earle, provincial police spokesperson, said the truck had loaded ceiling boards. She added that following the tragic death of the woman, a case of culpable homicide, including the cause of the accident is being investigated by the police in Glen.
The survivors of the accident were admitted to the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein for treatment of injuries and trauma. Survivors include both the bus and truck driver.
Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson of the Free State Department of Health, said that 19 survivors were treated in Pelonomi’s trauma unit, with one, a woman placed in the post-trauma unit for resuscitation. He said 17 were discharged while five will have their conditions reassessed after their X-ray results.
According to Mvambi, among the survivors are seven children between the ages of two and 18 years.
“Counselling was offered to the patients by the social workers at the hospital,” said Mvambi.
