The city of Bloemfontein remains the centre of sporting activity with this year’s national tournaments of the South African Schools Hockey Association (Sashoc). Events continue with the U13 and U16 championships.
The action-packed competition will officially close on 12 July with the U16 finals, while the U13 run ended Tuesday (04/07). The championship officially started on 25 June and is hosted by the Southern Free State Hockey federation.
Multitudes of players, boys and girls, showcased their talent to onlookers. The host, Southern Free State (SFS), held off tough challengers to lift the A-section schools hockey trophy on the final day.
In the girls’ A-section, SFS overcame Boland 3 – 2 in a penalty shoot-out. In a third place play-off, KZN Inland beat Western Province 2 – 1.
After the tournament, individual awards were presented to the best performers, while a total of 104 players were selected for six Sashoc national squads – boys’ and girls’ U18 A, U18 B and U17, consisting of 18 players each.
In the girls’ division, SFS star player Taheera Agousti was named player of the tournament, while Jaydon Brooker from Gauteng stood out in the boys’ competition.
He returned home with the player of the tournament and midfielder of the tournament accolades.
