Club-X-Society in Heidedal, Bloemfontein, has continued with its annual humanitarian gesture that benefits children and enables them to pursue the dream of gaining an education.

The club has donated essentials to learners of four primary schools: Olympia, Credence, Joe Solomon and Heide Primary.

These items range from a full set of uniform and shoes to groceries, stationery and toiletries. All of this was presented at a function held at Heide Primary on Saturday (29/07).

The club started with ten members – hence it is called Club X – and through the club’s ongoing initiative members strive to keep alive the spirit of the principle: Charity begins at home.

The current members, 19 in total by now, are alumni of the four schools that were beneficiaries of the club’s most recent efforts.

“This year we managed to cater for 24 children of the four schools we adopted since the inception of the club in 1995,” says Noleen Petersen, club member.

Last year 20 children benefited from the initiative.

An addition was made this year, in the form of the club donating Bibles to learners.

“A Bible is donated for each home these children are from, with the aim of them reading it and knowing about the power of God. Teaching and lessons from the Bible shape us.

“The benefit will be that children and their parents can read the Bible and have the knowledge of God’s wisdom,” says Petersen.

To make the yearly gesture a reality, club members host fundraising initiatives and each contribute R100 monthly. They are also supported by private entities.

With the proceeds raised they purchase essential items for less fortunate children, some of which are orphans.

The club identifies children from impoverished households as beneficiaries, tying in with its slogan, “Lean on us”.

Most of the parents in these households are reportedly unemployed and greatly depend on charities and community support for survival.

Through the initiative, members of the club continue to foster a culture of caring, respect and trust.
