The sports fraternity in the community of Rouxville is in for a real treat with a boxing tournament being hosted in this small town in the Free State on Sunday (06/08).
This will be the second championship in town at the Thabo Vuyo Secondary School, following the success of the first last year.
Dream Team Promotions has teamed up with the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation to stage the sporting event.
The tournament, honouring the legacy of the late state Pres. Nelson Mandela, was rescheduled to Sunday from its original date of 29 July.
“We continue to preserve Mandela’s memory and celebrate his life. We are also hoping to inspire the new generation to participate in sport, and the whole world to lead by his example,” said Lebogang Mahoko, managing director of Dream Team Promotions.
The one-day showdown will see male and female fighters, mainly from the Free State, trade leather in different divisions and sweating blood.
They will fight over rounds ranging in number from four to 12. Two international bouts will headline the event.
The women’s main contest will see South African and Free State born Matshidiso “Scorpion Queen” Mokatsane take on Cecilia Pitiseni from Zimbabwe over 12 rounds. The two women will be meeting a second time, having first met last year in April in Bloemfontein.
The men’s main bout will see hard-punching Jackson Kaptein from Freedom Square in Bloemfontein battle it out with Giresse Wingui from Guinea. The gruelling contest is also over 12 rounds.
Mahoko said the decision to feature numerous local boxers was aimed at enabling them to showcase their talent.
