An award-winning production highlighting themes of domestic violence, gender inequality, and sexism that plagues our society can be watched live over three-days at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Bloemfontein campus. Titled The Last Firefly, the drama is presented in English and Afrikaans to suit audiences speaking both languages.
It opens tomorrow (31/08) with performances in the Scaena Theatre rehearsal room, and ends on 2 September. Naomi Iizuka is the writer of the drama, which is directed by Debeer Cloete and Barend Kriel.
This South African production embraces Iizuka’s multi-cultural approach to theatre by incorporating elements of African music and storytelling in a tale that does not shy away from controversial themes such as domestic violence, and women and child abuse. As such, this play does carry an age restriction of ten years and older.
“It begins with light – a sliver, a flash – then comes a sound – a pulse, a beat, a crash – like a giant hammer smashing through the sky.”
Thus, the story of Boom begins as he sets out on an epic journey, ultimately discovering his true self. In this production, playwright Iizuka combines Japanese fairy tales and fables with her unique creative flair, to produce a play that feels both timeless and modern. The young protagonist’s journey shows the power of storytelling to help us overcome adversity.
The production features students from the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts at the UFS. Mhlangano Dladla plays the character of Boom in the drama. The play’s relatability stems from Boom being raised by a single mother who uses stories as a form of solace.
Other characters featured are Kesaobaka Jackals, Mhlangano Dladla, Katelyn Forbay, Anke Meyer-Auld, Lutho Dala, Jaano de Bruin, Banele Khumalo, and Liyema Sam.
Performances will be as follows: 31 August at 11:00; 1 September at 11:00 and 18:00; and 2 September at 11:00. Tickets are made available through Webtickets at R25 per person and R20 for a group of ten.
