Two persons believed to be company directors and their company from Bethlehem in the Free State have been served with summons to appear in court regarding a tax fraud case.

The matter is a result of an investigation by the Bethlehem-based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team.

Capt. Christopher Singo, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, said the suspects, aged 48 and 53 years, were each served with a summons on 13 and 17 November, respectively, concerning their alleged involvement in tax evasion. He said the suspects are set to appear in the Bethlehem Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday, 6 December, facing a charge of contravention of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011.

Singo said the findings by the South African Revenue Services (Sars) and the Hawks revealed the incident took place between November 2019 and February 2021.

“A preliminary probe by Sars uncovered the suspects’ alleged tax evasion which resulted in Sars losing more than R300 000,” said Singo.

He said the revenue services reported the matter to the Hawks for further investigations, culminating with the two directors served with a summons to appear in court.
