The national Toyota South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) championships underway in Bloemfontein have lived up to expectations with new records in athletics.
The achievers of the remarkable feats are Puseletso Mabote and Simone Kruger.
Mabote ran a new world record of 25:12 in the men’s 200 m T63 race, and also set a new African record in the men’s 100 m T63, competing in a mixed class final. Competing in a mixed class final, Mabote surpass his previous personal best of 25.81 by over half a second when he crossed the finish line in 25:12 to set a new global best. He continues his fairytale journey at the championships with another African record in the men’s long jump T63 with a leap of 5.93 m.
Kruger set a new African record in the women’s shotput F38 of 12.34 m. The event’s highlights saw an improved performance by Kerwin Noemdo, who equalled his own African record of F46 in the men’s shotput. The three athletes achieved their remarkable feats on Saturday, 23 March, underlining their ambitions to conquer this year’s Paralympic Games to be staged in Paris, France, from 28 August to 8 September.
The five-day event will close with a bang, today – Monday, 25 March, with the presentation of medals to the top performers at the Free State Athletics Stadium. The closing ceremony is set to start at 18:00.
