The success of the 141st instalment of Bloem Show continued its growth as a legacy brand and a vehicle for economic spin-offs. Evidence thereof include the overwhelming influx of patrons and commercial brands on exhibition from 25 April to 4 May in Bloemfontein.

This year’s show, held under the theme “Around the World”, is reported to have been crime free as safety and security was heightened by the footprint of private security, as well as members of the police and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who were also part of the range of exhibitions.

According to Elmarie Prinsloo, chief executive officer (CEO) of Bloem Show, the show saw a significant increase in attending patrons and commercial brands despite the economic challenges South Africa faces, boosting the economy of the Free State and Bloemfontein.

“This year’s show was certainly one of the best in history. It was enhanced by the excellent autumn weather, compared to last year when we had two evenings of thunder, forcing the stoppage of activities,” said Prinsloo.

“The word of mouth on the quality and the show being different, and the number of participants and international visitors at the agricultural section, certainly contributed to more figures this year.

This year’s edition had the highest attendance since 2012, a record number of livestock and great quality exhibitions and entertainment.”

Prinsloo said the 17,65% increase in attendance translated to a total of 126 427 visitors.

She stated that during the first week of this year’s show, attendance passed the 30 000 mark.

According to Prinsloo, the large numbers of people, and more than 400 commercial exhibitors of top quality, was made evident by businesses’ confidence and overall growth of the diverse consumer event.

“Compliments and positive feedback were received for the variety, quality, and addition of several new exhibitions to this year’s Bloem Show.

“Despite pressure on consumers and businesses in the current economic conditions, there were 330 exhibitors and 58 food stalls this year.”

Prinsloo said 2 342 entries were received at the creative handwork and arts department this year – a 13,3% increase.

“It is especially pleasing to see many entries were from schools and children. What an incredible sense of pride there is to see their articles displayed at the Bloem Show,” said Prinsloo.

She said there was also a 10,7% increase in dairy product entries, with proudly South African-made products the largest.

“These totaled 321 entries from several dairy factories in South African,” said Prinsloo.
