Brave runners of two Bloemfontein clubs, the Mangaung Athletics Club (MAC) and the Centre City Titaniums Athletics Club (CCTAC), have secured a haul of 66 medals combined at this year’s Comrades Marathon, held on Sunday, 9 June.

The locals embarked on a quest to conquer the Ultimate Human Race, running over 85,91 km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

The local heroes and heroines followed in the footsteps of winning pair: South Africa’s Gerda Steyn and Piet Wiersma of the Netherlands.

The CCTAC team’s undertaking culminated in 52 medals in total, after four runners were unable to finish. Honours won include 1 silver, 9 Bill Rowan, 15 Robert Mtshali, 14 bronze, and 13 Vic Clapham medals.

The MAC team won 14 medals from a group of 17 starters, after three fell by the wayside.

Ernest Khalata of the CCTAC won another silver, while Mokudubete Likotsi and Mosiuoa Khampepe raised the MAC flag, collecting the Bill Rowan and Robert Mtshali medals, respectively. Three CCTAC members, Carolise Jacobs, Hilda Ramakuela and Pinkie Taunyane, claimed a Robert Mtshali medal each.
