The Free State Department of Education is on the campaign trail to educate early childhood development (ECD) centres on safeguarding themselves as an integral part of community development. The drive runs until the end of June and further encourages the registration of centres.

The campaign officially started during Child Protection Week, observed from 31 May to 7 June.

The recent alleged rape of a three-year-old toddler at an unregistered centre in Bloemfontein is among the concerns that prompted the department to embark on this campaign.

Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the department, said the expected outcome was to have children, caregivers and parents know the signs of abuse and report cases thereof.

“Throughout this month, the department visits various ECD centres across the province, educating parents, children and practitioners about the importance of safeguarding children’s rights.

“The campaign aims at raising awareness that could aid in protecting children against abuse, exploitation, neglect, and all forms of violence,” Ndaba said.
