In the spirit of its celebration of 20 years of academic excellence and innovation the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, presented 67 most-coveted qualifications at its spring graduation ceremony on 6 September. Of these, 39 were master’s degree and 28 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualifications.
According to the university, this amount of doctoral degrees is the highest number in the history of the institution to have been conferred in a single graduation ceremony.
Prof. Pamela Dube, vice-chancellor and principal, said the record number of PhD graduates was in line with the institute’s 2030 mission and vision: to be “a leading African university of technology, shaping the future through innovation”.
The recipients were some of the 695 graduates who are from different backgrounds and represent a diverse set of disciplines. In light thereof, Dube highlighted that the graduates represented a commitment by the university towards inclusivity and making a global impact.
She congratulated all the PhD recipients, granting special recognition to Dr Itumeleng Phage, who received his doctorate. He is also a council member of the CUT.
In addition, Dube applauded the exceptional leadership within the Faculty of Management Sciences, and furthermore commended Prof. Albert Strydom, dean of the faculty, and Prof. Dennis Dzansi, director of the Entrepreneurship Development Unit (CUT-EDU), for their efforts in strengthening international partnerships.
“Our collaboration with universities in Ghana has been instrumental in creating opportunities for our university. We proudly conferred 13 PhDs from the Faculty of Management Sciences alone,” said Dube.
She also highlighted the university’s 20 years of growth, innovation, and significant impact.
Since its declaration as a university of technology in 2004, the university has produced approximately 66 000 graduates, demonstrating its substantial contribution to the province and the country.
Dube expressed confidence in the graduates’ potential to positively impact the world.
“As you embark on your professional journey, this university will forever remain your intellectual home, providing opportunities for demand-driven postgraduate programmes.
“With the valuable skills you have acquired, tailored to meet societal needs, your communities eagerly await your input, energy, and expertise.
“Your role is crucial, and we believe in your ability to contribute significantly to uplifting your communities. Our commitment to your success extends far beyond this day. Wherever you go, always remember where you come from,” said Dube.
