BLOEMFONTEIN – A veld fire that broke out earlier today and caused panic among property owners around Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein is under control. A team of firefighters that includes Fire Ops SA, a private fire brigade and the Mangaung Metro’s Fire unit brought the fire under control.
Lee Groenewald, sales and marketing for Fire Ops SA in Bloemfontein, says no structures were impacted, adding that a crew of firefighters remain at the scene to monitor the fire to ensure it is extinguished completely.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. It caused panic as firefighters battled to control it because of the wind that was blowing. A dark cloud of smoke covered the sky.
The fire reportedly started small at about 12:00, along the Lucas Steyn Road in the northern suburb of Bloemfontein. However, fanned by wind, the fire quickly spread into the Tempe Military base, causing significant damage to natural vegetation in the section of the military base. The fire did not directly impact the main military base.
