BLOEMFONTEIN: The Free State will have representation in three categories of this year’s national football finals of the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship. The national finals featuring U13 boys and girls and U19 boys are scheduled to take place from 6 to 11 October in Pretoria.
The schools are: the St Anne Academy from Virginia, Jb Tyu Primary School from Rouxville and Brebner Primary School from Bloemfontein. The two primary schools will compete in the U13 category, while St Anne will contest the U19 title. The three schools qualified as the provincial winners at this year’s final, which featured schools from the Motheo, Xhariep, Thabo Mofutsanya, Fezile Dabi and Lejweputswa districts. Each school received a gold medal and prize money of R100 000 in the U13, and R150 000 in the U19, division.

The provincial finals were staged at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Bloemfontein campus on 23 August, culminating in the three schools claiming top prizes.

The Jb Tyu Primary girls from the Xhariep region beat the Bekezela Primary School 2 − 1 to represent the Free State nationally, while St Anne outclassed the Louis Botha Technical High School (THS) 2 − 0. The Brebner boys defeated the Boikemisetso Primary School from Kroonstad 3 − 1. The runners-up each received a silver medal.

The schools that received bronze medals are: the Utsu High School’s U19 boys, and the Masaleng Primary School boys’ and St Anne girls’ U13 teams. The national winners stand a chance a win R1 million in prize money. The runners-up are guaranteed R600 000 each, while third and fourth place will win R500 000 and R400 000, respectively.
This tournament brings together more than 13 000 school teams from across South Africa. This year marks the 21st edition of the competition for youth football development, and co-sponsored by Sanlam.
