BLOEMFONTIEN: The Toyota Cheetahs remain intact for the semifinals of the prestigious Carling Currie Cup premier division. They bolstered their chances with an emphatic win against the Lions in a pulsating fixture played at their home turf of the Toyota Stadium last Saturday, 23 August.
The Cheetahs emerged as the victors in a fierce 47 − 31 battle of the big cats, extending their winning streak to four unbeaten matches in the championship. The win increased their home victory tally to three, and they will be looking to add to this by beating the Griquas in another important match scheduled for Friday, 29 August.
A fourth victory will help the local lads towards the target set by their head coach, Frans Steyn. The win over the Lions propelled Steyn’s warriors to the helm of the table of the championship, despite being tied at 21 points with the Kavaliers in second place. The illustrious mentor emphasised from the beginning of the competition the importance of his warriors continuing to exploit playing on their home turf in Bloemfontein, strengthening their resolve in the challenge of claim the sought-after domestic rugby trophy.
Lifting this trophy will not only reward the team’s efforts thus far with a satisfying conclusion, it will help establish their supremacy. The Steyn-led warriors are on the prowl and smell the blood of their Northern Cape neighbours, the Griquas, who are in third place with 20 points.
This is a must-win fixture for both sides given their ambitions to clinch this year’s instalment of the championship. The winner will cement their place in the semifinals, a step closer to championship glory.
Despite the semifinals being within his team’s reach, coach Steyn has stated the tournament is at its most important block, demanding execution of the game plan and salvaging the points on offer.
The Cheetahs’ next crucial match is an away game against the Bulls on 6 September, to be played at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria. This will pave the way for the semifinals on 13 September. This year’s final is scheduled for 20 September.
Kick-off for the Cheetahs’ upcoming fixture against the Griquas is at 17:00.
