Multi-award winning comedian Sifiso Nene is coming to Bloemfontein with his newest one man show, Because Of Success.

He will be on stage at the Windmill Casino’s Conference Centre on Friday, 1 August.

Nene’s performances are characterised by his ability to transform ordinary stories into captivating narratives, earning him a reputation as a fresh and engaging voice in the South African comedy scene. It is no surprise Nene is one of South Africa’s favourite comedians as his material is relevant and relatable.

Originally from Durban, Nene moved to Johannesburg in 2006 with the intention of being a scriptwriter for the comedy show, Pure Monate Show. He was told his writing was better suited to stand-up comedy so he embarked on a career in stand-up.

He entered the David Kau reality competition show So You Think You’re Funny! and after a 13-week process was voted as the winner in 2009, taking home a cash prize of R100 000. His win on the show led to greater exposure, and he landed a slot on Opening Guys, a reality show on Mzansi Magic hosted by Kagiso Lediga.

He won the Audience Choice Award at the second Annual South African Comics Choice Awards, which is voted for by the public; he joined the SABC1 youth talk show Mzansi Insider as a contributor and starred in the David Kau film Taxi Ride as Bhakabhaka – a rude, funny, and stubborn taxi driver who always carries a sjambok and is the best friend of Dlamini (played by Skhumba Hlophe). He reprised this role in the spin-off television series which aired on Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu.

In 2022, Nene went viral with his hit show Baby Mama Drama 2, which looked at the humorous side of an often sensitive subject as he delved into the hot topic of co-parenting for the second time.

“I never expected to write a second instalment since I believed I had gone through all the possible baby mama drama in my first show six years ago. However, the pandemic added more elements to my story and I decided to vent in the best way I know how: on stage,” said Nene.

Nene said he realised his talent while he was still growing up because his friends constantly told him he was funny, but never considered it as a way to make a living. And yet here we are, with Nene following a career that is far from over. Nene, who won the Joe Mafela Award and the Best Solo Show Award at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards last year, scooped the first Winners’ Choice Award at this year’s event in April 2025. This is an award presented to a person who was voted for by all the previous winners.

“It puts my name on a map, and in greater spaces, so I honestly appreciate it. Without any shadow of doubt, what the whole industry of comedy did for me makes me happy,” said Nene, who, as part of growth and diversification, now does his shows in a mixture of English and IsiZulu.

Tickets cost R250 and are available on Webtickets.co.za. The show will start at 20:00.
