The suspected murderer of a female student of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, Bunono Alulutho Buba (19), is remanded in custody.
The Colesberg Magistrates’ Court has turned down Siphosovuyo Yabo (21), application for bail.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Northern Cape has welcomed the court’s decision to deny the suspect bail. He is thus remanded in custody while the police continue with their investigation. Yabo’s application for bail was heard on Friday, 20 June, with the court ruling in favour of the state. He will reappear in court on Wednesday, 13 August.
“The NPA commends the prosecutor, Sisipho Zicina, for her diligent efforts in successfully opposing bail and ensuring that the interests of justice and the safety of the community are upheld. The NPA remains committed to intensifying its efforts in the prosecution of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), and reaffirms its stance that those who commit such heinous crimes will be brought to book and face the full might of the law,” said Mojalefa Senokotsoane, spokesperson for NPA Northern Cape and Free State.
Yabo was arrested on prima facie evidence after the victim’s body was discovered on the night of 5 June in the veld between Bongweni and Khayelitsha in Kuyasa. The young woman sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen.
The deceased Buba was pursuing a Bachelor of Education (SPFET) in Economic Management Sciences (ECO Management) degree at the CUT campus in Bloemfontein.
